Sugar Cookies And Christmas Time

A good sugar cookie can bring bake many fond memories of childhood. The aroma of freshly baked cookies can trigger thoughts of our youth. To me, baking sugar cookies are like the very first indication that Christmas is already on its way, and that this very simple sugar cookie recipe is just the perfect way to kick-off the festive season! Ever since I was a kid, cookies had been one of my favorite holiday treats. Baking them was also one of my earliest recollections of childhood holidays. I must admit, I was quite a fastidious eater as a child, and I can remember my mother making everything from Christmas cake to chocolate cakes, to cookies, and cupcakes for special occasions.

Decorated Sugar Cookies

Decorating Sugar Cookies Can Be A Blast

I used to look forward to decorating these cookies with all the usual embellishments that I thought were really pretty! Flowers, lace, candy cane, icing, ribbon, chocolate chips… My mom would make an already delicious recipe even more delicious by adding a few decorations. Today, I want to share some ideas on how to decorate Christmas bake goods with baked sugar, instead of regular icing.

This year, I am going to have even more fun decorating Christmas sugar cookies. I am going to try something new this year. Since I live near the ocean, there are many salt-water fish in my area, including the beautiful Royal Deltas. If you would like to try this idea, start by finding some tiny candy toppings, sprinkles and colored sugars and use them to decorate your baked goods with salt-water taffy bits.

Get Creative When Baking Sugar Cookies

You could also try a recipe for Christmas cookie dough where you substitute white sugar for the brown. This would be a very pretty design for Christmas pickles, or cranberry sauce for a Christmas dessert. Another fun idea for Christmas cookies is to use cinnamon for the center of a cookie. If you do not like the smell of cinnamon, try adding some cloves instead. A lot of people will tell you that ginger or walnuts would be a better choice for an authentic Christmas cookie, but my personal preference is a little bit of cinnamon!

The baking process for Christmas sugar cookies is very easy if you follow the instructions in the recipe closely.  A sugar cookie will rise will baking, then soon settle in the middle after you take them out from the oven and they cool off.  Don’t over bake a sugar cookie, it shouldn’t turn too brown.  Properly baked, it will be very lightly golden with just a hint of brown at the bottom.

Using a pastry bag or a set of cookie cutters, start cutting the cookies into rounds. Place the flattened pieces on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes. Once they are done, let them cool on a wire rack, and then make another round of cookie dough. Baking sugar cookies takes just a few minutes, but the resulting cookies are amazing!
